Oddworld has always been my favorite game franchise since the Playstation titles. I played the Gameboy and Xbox titles, and loved every minute of them. Lorne Lanning was restarting his game titles with Just Add Water hired as the company to program them. It’s great to hear about so many past titles being remade, but to see that the Oddworld universe is getting a reboot and future games to come warms my heart.
So what makes Lorne Lanning’s plan so great? Most of the reboots of the past couple of years have been taking payments from kickstarter. But, the Oddworld universe will be getting its start money from its HD remakes and reboots. They have already recreated Munch’s Odyssey and Stranger’s Wrath in HD for Steam and now the newest reboot of the original game, New ‘n’ Tasty. The company trusts that their current titles are enough to get them going in the right direction, and I completely agree. I don’t have an original Xbox anymore and to see these games created in high definition with steam achievements is fantastic! Now to see the PSX/PC game Oddworld Abe’s Odyssey completely redone in Unity with steam achievements adds an all new feel to an already great title.
If you haven’t played this game before, it’s about a huge odd universe where our protagonist Abe is employed at the slaughter house, “Rupture Farms”. One day while waxing the floors he listens in on a board room meeting where his employers are discussing the recent profit loss and a new product they are planning on putting on the market “New ‘n’ Tasty”. But when they show that it’s actually his species being used as the byproduct, he tries to escape and it’s up to you to help his colleagues escape and shut down Rupture Farms.
You can still purchase the original games on Steam, Abe’s Odyssey and Abe’s Exodus. Both which I was introduced to on the PSX and are up on Steam for a VERY fair price. And, if you plan on getting this game or are a huge fan of the Oddworld universe you absolutely need to purchase the DLC! It is completely worth it!
What’s new in this game? Steam cloud saving and achievements, the character movements are different, some cutscene videos are completely different, the 3d effects and lighting effects are gorgeous and the audio is slightly different with much better quality. Not to mention the DLC adds a whole new story. With Steam you get to use our computer as a streaming machine and stream the game to your DVR computer and play with a wireless Xbox 360 controller on your big TV. Then take your game on the go with your laptop and complete all those achievements.
